How SME Business got started.
SME Business was founded in Raleigh, NC and has grown into a trusted outsourced finance partner for small and mid-sized businesses across the Triangle, backed by 40 years of hands-on experience in accounting, financial strategy and business operations.
Whether a multi-million dollar corporation or a locally owned business, SME Business offers a variety of services to help clients thrive in their relevant industry. Founder Dave Thompson brought decades of experience building and running businesses across the UK before establishing SME, and remains actively involved in the firm today, working closely with clients to help them grow with greater clarity and confidence.
The firm also maintains ties to XPX Triangle, a network of attorneys, wealth managers, HR specialists and bankers who work together to help business owners plan for exit or succession.
In 2025, SME Business became the founding acquisition for AXIA Holding Company of the Triangle. The partnership supports continued investment in the firm’s growth across the Raleigh-Durham region, while Dave and the existing team continue to lead day-to-day operations.

His skills in Finance, Strategy and Business Operations have impacted many clients’ businesses, helping them grow and become more profitable. Dave’s vision is to see businesses reach their full potential and to see owners and senior business leaders have all the business tools they need to do so.

With a variety of background careers, working not only in Retail, and the Banking industry, she is also a fully qualified Personal Trainer!
MaryJo Martin
AccountantMaryJo brings six years of bookkeeping and accounting experience to her role at SME Business, where she’s been part of the team for the past eight months. Day to day, she keeps clients’ financial records accurate, reconciles bank and credit card accounts, and manages payroll to make sure everyone is paid correctly and on time, work she approaches with a QuickBooks Online ProAdvisor certification behind her. What she enjoys most is the problem-solving side of the job, pairing a natural head for numbers with a genuine interest in giving business owners peace of mind that their finances are in good hands.
